Champions in Global Surgery Programme

Investing in the future surgical leaders

The Champions in Global Surgery programme was created in 2022 to offer excellent young professionals valuable first-hand experience in global surgery within an international non-governmental organisational context, while tapping into their knowledge, ideas and expertise.

LMICs have 1 surgeon per 100’000 compared to HIC who have 57 surgeons per 100’000

The gap in LMICs in the surgeon workforce is estimated to be 383% in 2030

The gap in LMICs in the anaesthesia workforce is projected to be 550% in 2030

The GSF is firmly placed within the International Geneva Global Health ecosystem, working in close collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), providing unique exposure and networking opportunities within the UN System. These experiences and interactions provide a strong foundation for investing into the existing and future surgical care workforce, shaping the next cohort of leaders in global surgery.

Why GSF?

The GSF is firmly embedded in the International Geneva ecosystem and our office is strategically placed at its heart, in walking distance to the European Headquarters of the United Nations. Our strong network and close partnership with UNITAR allows us unparalleled access to the world’s leading stakeholders in global health.

My most valuable experience was working with a team of dedicated team members who strive to improve access to surgical care in LMICs.

Through collaborative projects, GSF, with various partners and local stakeholders, has tangible impacts on the populations that they serve.

It was an incredible learning experience and an excellent opportunity to make meaningful contributions within the global surgery space. I was able to interact with experts in the field while still being given responsibility and autonomy over my work in a variety of projects.

Moreover, there is something really special about the team and the workplace culture, and it likely has to do with the GSF’s unwavering commitment to serving those who need care most and using that commitment to guide our every move.
