BIO Ventures for Global Health and The Global Surgery Foundation Announce Joint Partnership

23 February 2022, Geneva, Switzerland - The Global Surgery Foundation (GSF) and BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH) are pleased to announce a joint memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will seek to build surgical capacity.

The organisations will leverage their respective expertise to build critical surgical skills. The partnership will involve national oncology surgical planning with a focus on sustainable development in global surgery and global oncology surgery. Additional joint projects of mutual interest, including fundraising, research, and organising international conferences and symposia to raise the profile of global surgery will be developed.

BVGH is a non-profit organization that strategically develops and manages programs across the for-profit and non-profit sectors to accelerate research and development (R&D) for poverty-related diseases; build biomedical R&D capacity in low- and middle-income countries; and, through the African Access Initiative (AAI), improve cancer patient care in six African countries: Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal. AAI unites private industry, governments and cancer hospitals, and global oncology experts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, build clinical oncology and clinical trials capacity, and establish sustainable access to cancer medicines and technologies in Africa. Learn more about BVGH here.

The GSF is a Switzerland-based organization anchored in the United Nations (UN). Its mission is to to accelerate and expand the provision of surgical care for attaining better health for all. The GSF facilitates collaboration with countries, UN agencies, and other international organizations, as well as civil society. Its goal is to increase surgical capacity in countries which need the assistance most. Lack of access to basic surgical care is the primary cause of 30% of the global burden of disease, leading to 17 million preventable deaths globally each year (6 times greater than the death toll of HIV, Malaria, and TB combined). Therefore, the vision of the GSF is a world with universal and equitable access to safe, quality, timely, and affordable surgical, obstetric, and anesthesia care. Learn more about The GSF here.
