New collaboration with Turkish Ministry of Health and Universities in value-based healthcare

The Global Surgery Foundation (GSF) and the Turkish Ministry of Health, Marmara University School of Medicine and Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University School of Medicine have entered into a strategic partnership for the implementation of the Value-based healthcare (VBHC) programme, established by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the GSF.

The ‘value’ within the value-based healthcare approach refers to the ‘value’ for the patient

The value within the VBHC approach refers to the ‘value’ for the patient, focused on the health outcomes that matter to patients relative to the resources or costs required to deliver those outcomes. The aim of the VBHC healthcare program is to ultimately pilot a system that uses patient reported outcome measures (PROM) to improve patient-centred care and work towards implementing VBHC policies. In 2021, the GSF and UNITAR, with the support of Takeda, launched a project to facilitate locally-led initiatives that will promote and advance the implementation of VBHC models.

The projects were developed in close cooperation with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Türkiye

In Türkiye, the pilot project will be preceded by a two-pronged baseline needs assessment focused on better understanding patient and provider perspectives. The first project will focus on qualitative research to better understand the perceptions, beliefs and behaviours that affect early detection of Breast Cancer in Türkiye. In the second project, a questionnaire will be administered to determine the etiological causes of diagnostic and treatment delays for locally advanced Breast Cancer.

The projects were developed within the VBHC for Türkiye Technical Expert Working Group working in close cooperation with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Türkiye.

The formalisation of these partnerships is an important step to increase outcome measurements for Breast Cancer care in Türkiye.
