New WHO Group Aims to Improve Caesarean Section Guidelines — GSF Joins the Effort

As global caesarean section rates continue to rise, new WHO efforts aim to ensure this life-saving procedure is used safely, appropriately, and equitably. GSF is proud to contribute to this critical work.

A Surgical Procedure on the Rise

Caesarean sections are now the most frequent major abdominal surgery performed globally. Rates have climbed from 6% in 1990 to 21% in 2018, with projections reaching 30% by 2030.

An Unequal Reality

But this rise reveals a deeper problem: inequity. While some women lack timely access to this life-saving procedure, others undergo it without medical necessity—often at the expense of their health.

A New WHO Initiative

To address these challenges, the Global Surgery Foundation is proud to join WHO’s new Guideline Development Group on caesarean section care, alongside other global experts.

The GSF is represented by Dr. John Varallo, Team Lead for Women’s Health, contributing to evidence-based guidance for safer, more equitable care.
