Global Surgery Foundation Releases 2024 Annual Report: A Landmark Year for Surgical Equity
The report marks a year of growth for the organisation in expanding access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical care worldwide.
2024—A Year Defined by Programmatic Expansion
The Global Surgery Foundation (GSF) has officially released its 2024 Annual Report, capturing a year defined by programmatic expansion, deeper partnerships, and measurable progress in surgical care access worldwide.
In a joint message from Executive Director Dr. Geoff Ibbotson and Board Chair Prof. Rifat Atun, GSF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe, timely, and affordable surgical care for all. “This year, we made meaningful strides in strengthening surgical systems in some of the world’s most underserved regions,” they wrote. “None of this would be possible without our partners—your trust and collaboration fuel this movement.”
Accelerated Growth of SURGfund and SURGhub Drives Progress
Driven by strong growth of GSF’s flagship initiatives in catalytic financing (SURGfund) and training (SURGhub), key results from 2024 include:
3.1 million people impacted through GSF-supported programmes.
13,655 patients and healthcare workers impacted through country-programming
12,000+ healthcare workers reached across 189 countries via SURGhub, the award-winning Global Surgery Learning Hub.
6,100+ safe births supported through SURGfund projects in Nepal, India, and Tanzania.
SURGfund expanded to seven active projects in five countries, with a paradigm-shifting approach to financing surgical systems.
The GSF also prepared a significant expansion of its maternal health programming in Nigeria and Kenya for 2025.
As the only fund dedicated exclusively to surgical care systems, SURGfund represents a new era in global health financing—one that prioritizes locally led, equity-focused, and sustainable solutions.
