Dr. Jean Chamberlain

Obstetrics, Clinical Consultant

Dr. Jean Chamberlain is an internationally recognised expert in women’s health and a Member of the Order of Canada. A qualified obstetrician-gynaecologist, she is a professor at McMaster University in Canada.

She has volunteered in some of the world’s poorest countries to make childbirth safer, including Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Yemen. She is Co-founding Director of Save the Mothers, an organisation dedicated to preventing maternal deaths through the development of indigenous African leadership. From 2005 to 2017, she worked primarily in Uganda with Save the Mothers. Before this, she worked full-time as an obstetrician-gynaecologist in rural Yemen from 2000 to 2005.

In 2017, Dr. Chamberlain returned to clinical practice and teaching at McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton in Canada. She continues to support the work of Save the Mothers and to participate in leadership mentoring.

Her work has earned her several awards, including the Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the International Community Service Award from the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), recognising her outstanding contribution to the health of mothers around the world.

Dr. Chamberlain is the author of Game Changers, Where Have All the Mothers Gone? and, more recently, Our Long Midnight, which shares her perspective as an obstetrician and the daughter of ageing parents. She is married to Thomas Froese, and they have three children.
