Training Perioperative Nurses: New Course Now on SURGhub
Discover the critical role of perioperative nurses in delivering safe, high-quality surgical care.
The Global Surgery Foundation (GSF) proudly announces the launch of Exploring Perioperative Nursing, a dynamic online course now available on SURGhub, the United Nations Global Surgery Learning Hub.
By offering insight into the structure and significance of the specialty, the course aims to spark curiosity and inspire more nurses—especially those in low-resource settings—to explore perioperative nursing as a potential career path. As such, it is a powerful first step in encouraging deeper interest and future training in the field.
The course was made possible with the support of the Johnson & Johnson Foundation and is in line with Johnson & Johnson’s long-standing commitment to supporting and empowering the nursing profession to better connect communities to care and improve access to quality care.
For Surgical Care to Work, it Takes Nurses
Perioperative nursing is a dynamic, team-based, highly rewarding patient-centric career within nursing. Perioperative nurses are essential members of the surgical team, providing critical care before, during, and after surgery. They ensure patient safety, manage surgical equipment, and coordinate closely with surgical teams to support the best outcomes.
The demand for perioperative nurses continues to grow, emphasizing the need for accessible, high-quality training to prepare nurses for the complexities of surgical care. Investing in perioperative nursing education strengthens healthcare systems, improves patient outcomes and helps ensure safer surgeries worldwide.
Providing Perioperative Nursing Training
The course offers an introductory understanding of perioperative nursing and is targeted to newly graduated nurses, early career nurses and nursing students – particularly those in limited-resource settings.
Through 11 structured modules, participants explore patient care before, during, and after surgery; teamwork and communication; surgical equipment management; resource optimization; and ethical considerations. The course integrates interactive content, real-world scenarios, and evidence-based best practices to prepare learners to strengthen surgical systems and improve patient outcomes, especially in low-resource settings.
Participants benefit from interactive content, real-world scenarios, and evidence-based best practices, preparing them to support optimal patient outcomes and contribute to safer surgical care globally.
By the end of the course, participants will have a solid understanding of what perioperative nursing entails—equipping and encouraging them to take the next steps toward entering the specialty.
A Shared Committment to Nurses
Developed with the support of the Johnson & Johnson Foundation, this course highlights the power of partnerships in bridging educational gaps in surgical care. Hosted on SURGhub, it reaches nurses who might otherwise lack access to high-quality training.
