Prof. Ibironke Desalu

Prof Ibironke Desalu is a Professor of Anaesthesia at the University of Lagos and a consultant paediatric anaesthetist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria.  Her other areas of sub-specialty interest include Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Difficult airway and Patient Blood Management. She is the lead paediatric anaesthetist and SmileTrain anaesthetist in her institution. 

She is passionate about training in anaesthesia in general and specifically paediatric anaesthesia and led the WFSA post fellowship sub-specialisation training in paediatric anaesthesia in Nigeria in 2016. She is currently one of core faculty for Paediatric Anaesthesia Training in Africa (PATA) which aims to produce specialists and leaders in paediatric anaesthesia. She is a member of the Post Diploma Certificate in Basic Paediatric and Cleft Anaesthesia working group; a collaboration of Smile Train and West African College of Surgeons (WACS).  Prof Desalu developed a 3 day training programme for anaesthesia providers for delivery of safe anaesthesia for cleft surgeries “ Safe Anaesthesia Delivers Smiles” which has been delivered in Nigeria, Senegal and Guinea Bissau. She worked in the team that developed and piloted the new SAFEPaeds Cleft training course.

Prof Desalu is the founding and current President of the Paediatric Anaesthesia Society of Nigeria (PASoN), a specialist society committed to promote and set standards for the safe provision of anaesthesia and sedation in Nigerian children.

She has numerous publications and has contributed material on paediatric anaesthesia to various fora. She is presently a member of the WFSA Publication committee.

Prof Desalu has worked as part of numerous Smile Train and Lifebox working groups. She is currently a member of the Smile Train Research and Innovation Advisory Council and a past member of Smile Train Africa Medical Advisory Board.
