Dr. Matthias Rüger

MD

Matthias is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and traumatologist, specialized in limb reconstruction. In this capacity he works as consultant at University Children’s Hospital and Balgrist University Hospital, both in Zurich. In addition, he is a clinician scientist at ETH Zurich, Laboratory for Bone Biomechanics, where he is involved in developing next generation diagnostic tools for metabolic bone disease. In the space of value based healthcare and personalized medicine, he developed a wide range technologies ranging from a digital exergaming system for pediatric patients, mobile apps connecting patients and caregivers, to a patented orthopedic biometal with tunable mechanical properties to significantly extent implant lifespan in situ. He coauthored a number of impactful peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on these innovations. He is teaching limb reconstruction techniques to medical and engineering students in Zurich, as well as international audiences through a variety of formats.

He graduated from RWTH Aachen polytechnic university in Germany in 2003, received his medical doctorate magna cum laude and went on to complete his residencies in adult trauma and orthopedic surgery in Aachen, Innsbruck, Austria, as well as Munich, Germany. He completed an AO spine fellowships and is a board certified emergency physician. He continued to specialize in limb reconstruction and pediatric orthopedic surgery in Murnau, Germany. In 2016, he joined the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics and Neuroorthopedics at Children’s Hospital Zurich.

With his strong background in both clinical medicine and technology, Matthias joined GSF to support the team in matters of technology translation and digitization, as well as surgical training.
